SDWatch is mandated by the Department of Italian and Supranational Law of the University of Milan to publish, free of charge, original content authored by Students and volunteer staff of the LL.M in Sustainable Development. Criteria as well as final decision on publication are left to the sole discretion of the Board

Please Note: ONLY LL.M students (former and current) & staff are welcome to submit papers for consideration.

Licensing / Disclaimer / Rights of the Author

Unless otherwise notified, all publications and other special issues published on The Sustainable Development Watch (SDW) are distributed under Creative Commons License (BY-NC-SA).

Under such license, the Author remain the sole responsible of the work submitted. You - the author - are therefore responsible for ensuring compliance with legal requirements (copyright/licensing, plagiarism), you certify that you are the rightful author of your work, and/or commit to attribute work that isn't yours according to law. The compilation as a whole is shared under the same license, which means that no notification is required prior to re-use of your work. 

Items published by the SDW may be freely shared among individuals as long as attribution is made according to Creative Commons' best practices, but they may NOT be republished in any medium for commercial purposes. For further information and special permissions, please contact the Board, through the contact section of this website. For more information about our Licensing, please refer to Our Licensing Policy.

PUBLICATION GUIDELINES

General Rules
 

  • Submission shall address any aspect of Sustainable Development. In the case of student publications, submission should be based on student paper in the context of a mid-term or final examination as part of the LL.M in Sustainable Development, which shall have been graded 29/30 or above. ​​​

    • ​In addition to their papers, authors shall also provide a brief biography, since publishing on SDWatch also serves as a platform for visibility.
       

  • Submission are subject to a standard review process before publication: Authors are generally expected to amend their original submission, taking reviews into consideration.  

    • Please note: you remain the sole author of your publication and therefore, bear all responsibilities for its content.

  • For theses only: make sure you fill in the consent form and upload it in .pdf format. WITHOUT IT, WE CANNOT PROCEED TO PUBLISH YOUR THESIS.

Submission, Formatting and Miscellaneous 

​

  1. Papers/essays and theses must be sent in the PDF format through the apposite form

    1. ​For Papers and Essays, the collaborative review process will be conducted in coordination with the Board. It is necessary for the due conduct of the review, that the author possesses a Google account, so as to access Gmail/Google Drive services, free of charge. â€‹â€‹â€‹

    2. For Theses, which are not subject to review, the original PDF format will be published as submitted, as long as it is a copy of the original submission for the award of the LL.M final dissertation. 

    3. Please submit your publication in PDF format, with the document name formatted as follows: CohortYear_NAME_date-of-grade-attribution.pdf; for instance: 2016_SMITH_01-01-2017.pdf

    4. Although you remain solely responsible of the quality and content of your publication, The SDWatch Board may conduct plagiarism check on any submission. Breach of plagiarism rules leads to immediate desk-rejection. 
       

  2. Papers/Essays should comply to the the Harvard style of Referencing. â€‹â€‹

    1. Should you wish to submit your work following another referencing style, please get in touch prior to submission. 

    2. Please do not include any footnotes. If you are submitting an already-written piece containing footnotes, decide whether to move the footnote text into the main body of the piece or delete it;

    3. Please put any citations/references in parentheses immediately after the propositions or quotations that they support. We do not accept footnote citations;

    4. Hyperlinks: Insert embedded hyperlinks to relevant supporting materials and legal texts, including statutes, treaties and cases. Always consider what would be useful to the reader;

    5. Fonts, spacing, and paragraph format: Any font is fine. Please submit your post single spaced with a single line return between paragraphs and no indentation. Use headings at your discretion (e.g., every four paragraphs) to break up long posts. Do not use more than one level of headings. Headings should be in bold;
       

  3. Authors shall provide an abstract, a short biography and a picture together with the paper/essay/thesis. â€‹

    1. The abstract shall consist of 150-300 words (min. 1000 characters), including a brief description of the Paper’s contribution to a particular area of Sustainable Development and of the general objectives of the paper as well as the methodology in use, if applicable.

    2. The short biography typically includes a brief overview of your pre- and post- (if applicable) LL.M occupation, your LL.M stream/concentration, internship, as well as your origins and interests, and the topic of your thesis (if applicable). Do not forget to indicate your social media details (LinkedIn, ResearchGate, Google Scholar, …)  and a picture. Your information will be published as a personal profile in the section "the Authors", should you wish to edit, or no longer appear on, this section, please inform the Board of your request. â€‹â€‹

Reminder: Currently, only submissions from LL.M in Sustainable Development students and staff will be accepted for publication. Please use your @xxx.unimi.it address for any correspondence with SDWatch. 

SUBMISSION CHECKLIST

  1. ​Check the eligibility of your work according to our Guidelines;

  2. Make sure you have an Abstract ready and, if it is the first time, a short bio as well as your social media references (LinkedIn, Twitter, etc..), and a picture in order to create your profile on the  "Authors" Page.

  3. For theses only: make sure you fill in the consent form and upload it in .pdf format. WITHOUT IT, WE CANNOT PROCEED TO PUBLISH YOUR THESIS.

  4. Once we receive it, we will check it for plagiarism and then, publish it!

  5. Once published you will receive a notification email.
